Who owns whom

A few companies own most of the names on the market, and several changed hands in 2024 and 2025. Brands in the same family often share equipment.

Carrier Global

Also owns Viessmann and the Toshiba Carrier ductless business (now Carrier Japan).

Trane Technologies

TraneAmerican Standard AmeristarRunTru

Its ductless comes from Mitsubishi Electric through the METUS joint venture in the US.

Lennox International

Ductless through a Samsung joint venture; signed in June 2026 to buy Heat Controller (Comfort-Aire, Century).

Daikin Industries

Goodman and Amana are made by Daikin Comfort Technologies in Texas.

Paloma Rheem Holdings

Bought Nortek Global HVAC (Oct 2024) and Fujitsu General (2025), now GENERAL Inc.

Bosch

Bought Johnson Controls' residential HVAC business, including Johnson Controls-Hitachi, on July 31, 2025; uses the York and Hitachi names under licence.

Mitsubishi Electric

Sold in the US through Mitsubishi Electric Trane HVAC US, a joint venture with Trane Technologies.

Haier

GE Appliances is a Haier company and also builds ductless units certified under several Allied Air and Lennox-family names.

Innovair Solutions (Quebec)

The former Ouellet Group; Stelpro joined through a 2024 alliance.

Midea Group

ENERGY STAR shows identical Midea-built systems listed under many other names (see each model table's 'also listed as').

Gree Electric

Also sold as Tosot.

How to read the numbers

Size
The rated heating output at 47°F, in BTU per hour. Tons are nominal cooling tons (12,000 BTU/h each), the size installers quote. The right size comes from a room-by-room load calculation, not from the old system.
COP at 5°F
Heat out divided by electricity in, measured at 5°F. A COP of 2 gives two units of heat for each unit of power. Electric baseboards are 1.
Heat at 5°F
The most heat the system can make at 5°F, and the share of its rated output that is. Above 100% means it can push harder in the cold than its rating at 47°F.
HSPF2
Seasonal heating efficiency in a US test climate (Region IV). Higher is better; ENERGY STAR needs at least 7.8 for split systems.
SEER2 and EER2
Seasonal and peak-heat cooling efficiency. ENERGY STAR needs SEER2 of at least 15.2 for split systems.
ENERGY STAR Cold Climate
A COP of at least 1.75 at 5°F (−15°C), at least 70% of rated capacity there, and a test proving the unit's own controls deliver it (spec version 6.2).
NEEP cold-climate list
Some Northeast and Midwest utility programs require a model on the Northeast Energy Efficiency Partnerships' cold-climate air-source heat pump list, which publishes performance down to 5°F and below.
AHRI number
The certificate for one exact outdoor and indoor pairing. Rebates are paid on that pairing, so get it on your quote and check it in the AHRI Directory ↗.
Refrigerant
R-454B and R-32 are the newer, lower-impact refrigerants. R-410A systems are older designs; servicing them will get dearer over time.

Rebates and what they require

The federal 25C tax credit ended for heat pumps placed in service after December 31, 2025. The federal Home Electrification and Appliance Rebates, where a state runs them, require an ENERGY STAR certified heat pump. Utilities and cities add their own rules. Open counts are from our check on October 19, 2026.

Questions people ask

Which heat pump brand is best for cold climates?

On ENERGY STAR's certified ratings, the most efficient cold-climate mini-split at 5°F on a current refrigerant is Midea's M3OX430-27HFN8-M1 (COP 2.80), and the best central system of 2 tons or more is Samsung's AC060FCUPCG (COP 2.58). Most major brands now sell a cold-climate line, so the installer's sizing and the model's capacity at your design temperature matter more than the badge. Ask for a room-by-room heat-loss calculation and the AHRI certificate for the exact pairing quoted.

Are the cheaper brands the same equipment as the expensive ones?

Often, yes. ENERGY STAR shows identical certified ratings under several names: 25 of the systems in our leaderboards are also listed under another brand. Carrier, Bryant and the ICP brands (Heil, Tempstar, Comfortmaker) share many models; Daikin, Goodman and Amana share platforms; Trane and American Standard sell the same units. The differences are usually the warranty terms, the dealer network and the price.

What does a heat pump warranty actually cover?

Parts and the compressor, almost never labour. Most makers give 10 years only if you register within 60 or 90 days of installation; miss it and many drop to 5 years on parts. Several (Daikin, Goodman, Amana, Fujitsu, LG) also void the warranty on equipment bought online unless a licensed contractor installs it. Each brand page lists the exact terms we found.

Does the heat pump have to be certified to get a rebate?

Usually. The federal Home Electrification and Appliance Rebates (where your state runs them) require an ENERGY STAR certified heat pump, and many utilities add a cold-climate or efficiency rule (ENERGY STAR Cold Climate, the NEEP cold-climate list, or SEER2/HSPF2 minimums). The 25C tax credit ended for heat pumps placed in service after December 31, 2025. Each metro page lists the rule for every program we found.

Should I avoid R-410A?

New systems mostly use R-454B or R-32 now: in the US, 83% of certified systems on ENERGY STAR's list use one of them. US rules ended R-410A in most new split systems from 2025, with a limited exception for units built before 2025. R-410A equipment still works, but service refrigerant will get scarcer and dearer, so ask which refrigerant a quote uses.

How do I check the exact model a contractor quotes?

Ask for the AHRI reference number for the outdoor and indoor pairing. Look it up in the AHRI Directory, and search the outdoor model in ENERGY STAR's product finder. The model tables on these pages include AHRI numbers so you can compare like with like.

Model data: ENERGY STAR Certified Heat Pumps (285,053 pairings, updated October 19, 2026), filtered to pairings certified for the US. We leave out listings with physically impossible ratings and placeholder entries. Leaderboards use R-454B and R-32 systems only. Brand facts and rebate rules were researched from makers' and programs' own pages on October 19, 2026; each brand page lists its sources. Running-cost comparisons on the metro pages use EIA state energy prices and the same seasonal COP planning values used on our Canadian pages, by heating degree days.
