Climate and sizing

Cooling runs most of the year here, so summer efficiency matters more than heating at 5°F. This is a humid climate: a variable-speed system that runs longer at low speed pulls more moisture out of the air than a single-stage one. Whatever the climate, the system should be sized from a room-by-room load calculation (ACCA Manual J), not from the size of the old air conditioner or furnace: an oversized heat pump short-cycles, dehumidifies poorly and costs more.

Heat pump amountsPer condensing unit: $40 at SEER 16.00 / SEER2 15.20 (geothermal 14.00 EER or more); $550 at SEER 17.00 / SEER2 16.20 (geothermal 15.00 EER or more). If the system costs less than the rebate, the rebate is matched to the invoice price.

Equipment ruleMust be 'a new, ducted, energy-efficient system' replacing an older unit; 'Ductless mini split systems are not eligible for rebates.' An AHRI reference sheet or certificate is required. Straight-cool systems with natural gas heat need a new furnace, and propane doesn't qualify.

Other conditionsA contractor with a Tampa Electric vendor number deducts the rebate on the invoice, and the rebate is paid to the contractor. The page also offers a 'self-install option' for homeowners. Apply within 90 days of installation.

High-Efficiency Electric Home Rebates

The federal rebate (formerly HEAR) pays up to $8,000 toward an ENERGY STAR certified heat pump for income-qualified households, through the state. Since May 29, 2026 it covers only upgrades from existing electric equipment, and the installer must be on the state's contractor list. Florida's status is in the program list above.
