Dehumidifiers & hygrometers

Much of the musty-basement problem is seasonal: warm, humid summer air meets cool foundation walls. A hygrometer shows whether you have a humidity problem at all, and a dehumidifier sized for the space handles the summer side. Winter condensation on cold surfaces is different. It's an insulation and air-leakage problem that an energy audit diagnoses, and no dehumidifier fixes it.

Not sure this category applies to your home? The testing guide covers which tests matter. For the testing side, see the mold & indoor air guide and infrared scanning.

Measure before you buy

Govee hygrometer (2-pack)

Bluetooth thermo-hygrometers that log readings to your phone, sold in pairs: one upstairs, one in the basement. A week of data shows whether you need a dehumidifier at all.

The compact pick

Midea Cube (35–50 pint)

A small footprint that nests down for storage, with app control and a washable filter. The 35-pint size suits a typical basement.

The big-basement unit

hOmeLabs 50-pint

High capacity for large or damp basements. Run it on a drain hose, or buy the version with a built-in pump, so you never empty a bucket.

Before you buy

  • EPA's guidance: keep indoor humidity below 60%, ideally between 30% and 50%.
  • Pint ratings changed in 2019, when DOE moved its test to cooler conditions, so the same machine now carries a smaller number than older listings. Compare ratings made under the same test.
  • Buy ENERGY STAR and use the drain hose: a full bucket is how dehumidifiers end up switched off by fall.
  • If humidity is fine but a cold corner still grows mold, that's a cold-surface problem, and an auditor's infrared scan finds it.
  • Mold already there? EPA says to fix the water problem first, dry everything, scrub hard surfaces with detergent and water, and get help for areas larger than about 10 square feet.
