Which tests does your home need?

Radon, carbon monoxide, lead, asbestos, mold and well water each have their own triggers: the year the house was built, where it is, its water and fuel, and what you’re planning. Answer a few questions and get the tests to consider, each with the reason from EPA, CPSC or DOE.

When was your home built?
Your county’s EPA radon zone (optional)

How the screener decides

  • Radon is on every list, because EPA says every home should be tested. Your radon zone adds context but never takes it off the list.
  • Carbon monoxide alarms are recommended for every home; fuel-burning appliances, a fireplace or an attached garage move them to the top.
  • Lead comes up for homes built before 1978, or when you’re not sure of the year.
  • Asbestos and vermiculite come up for homes built before 1990, the end of the period when Libby, Montana vermiculite dominated U.S. sales, or whenever you’ve seen vermiculite.
  • Mold comes up when you report moisture or a musty odor; well water when you’re on a private well.
  • Energy work adds tests that protect it: a combustion safety test when air sealing a home with fuel-burning appliances, and a Manual J when replacing heating or cooling.

State rules come from the 20 jurisdictions we checked in full plus national reviews of radon and mold laws, verified October 12, 2026. This is a screener, not a diagnosis: a certified professional’s test is what tells you the answer for your home.
