Dehumidifiers & hygrometers

Half of Ontario's musty-basement problem is seasonal: warm humid summer air meeting cool foundation walls. A $15–$25 hygrometer proves whether you have a humidity problem at all; a properly sized dehumidifier fixes the summer half. The winter half — condensation on cold surfaces — is an insulation and ventilation problem the audit diagnoses, and no dehumidifier fixes it.

Not sure this category applies to your home? The 30-second screener flags it if so, and the mold & indoor air guide covers the testing side.

Measure before you buy

Govee hygrometer (2-pack)

Bluetooth-logging thermo-hygrometers, about $15–$25 each and sold in pairs — one upstairs, one in the basement, and a week of data tells you whether you need a dehumidifier at all.

The apartment-to-basement pick

Midea Cube (35–50 pint)

Compact footprint that nests for storage, app control, and a washable filter — sized right for typical basements at the 35-pint mark.

The big-basement standard

hOmeLabs 50-pint

The straightforward high-capacity unit for large or wet basements — pair it with its drain-hose outlet so you never empty a bucket.

Price bands are September 2026 Canadian planning figures — street prices move, so treat them as budget bands and check the live listing.

Before you buy

  • Winter indoor target is roughly 30–50% relative humidity; summer basements drift far above it without help.
  • Buy Energy Star and use the drain hose — the bucket is how dehumidifiers end up unplugged by November.
  • If humidity is fine but a cold corner still grows mould, that's a cold-surface (insulation) problem — the audit's thermal scan finds it.
  • Persistent high humidity in a tightened house is the textbook case for an HRV — ask the planner.
