Air purifiers (HEPA)

A properly sized true-HEPA purifier is the fastest air-quality win money can buy: it strips wildfire-smoke particles, renovation dust, and allergens from the room you actually live in. It treats symptoms, not causes — mould needs its moisture source fixed and radon needs mitigation — but on a smoke day or mid-renovation, nothing else works as fast.

Not sure this category applies to your home? The 30-second screener flags it if so, and the mold & indoor air guide covers the testing side.

The benchmark

Coway AP-1512HH Mighty

The default recommendation in this category for a decade — true HEPA, quiet, frugal on power, filters that don't cost a fortune. Right-sized for bedrooms and offices to ~35 m².

The smoke & odour value

Winix 5500-2

True HEPA plus a real washable carbon filter — the combination that handles wildfire-smoke smell, not just the particles. Regularly the best value per unit of clean air delivered.

The big-room unit

Levoit Core 600S

Moves enough air for open-plan main floors and basements (~70 m²) with app control and an onboard particle sensor for auto mode.

Before you buy

  • Size by the room: aim for a unit rated well above your room's area so it cleans on its quiet speeds — an undersized purifier on max is a loud purifier that loses.
  • "True HEPA" is the phrase that matters; "HEPA-type" filters are not the same thing.
  • The real cost is filters — price a year of replacements before choosing, and stock a spare set before smoke season.
  • During renovations in pre-1990 homes, a purifier is a supplement to containment and HEPA vacuuming, never a substitute — see the lead and asbestos guides.
