Rebate and program changes

Home energy programs change often, and rarely with much notice. This is what changed recently, province by province, with a link to our full guide and to the official page for each one.

  1. British Columbia

BC: new Home Renovation Rebate requirements for invoices from October 15, 2026

Better Homes BC says some Home Renovation Rebate requirements changed for invoices dated on or after October 15, 2026; earlier invoices follow the May 15, 2026 rules. A heat pump replacing electric heat still gets $4,000 (whole home) or $1,500 (partial). The new requirements also list $4,000 from FortisBC for a dual-fuel system (a heat pump paired with a gas furnace) replacing a FortisBC natural gas or Revelstoke piped-propane furnace at least 15 years old.

  2. All of Canada

Canada: new National Heat Pump Rebate announced, opening early 2027

The federal government announced a National Heat Pump Rebate: $2,000 toward an eligible cold-climate air-source heat pump, or up to $10,000 for households below the median income. You apply online, approval comes within 24 hours, no EnerGuide evaluation is needed and it can be combined with provincial rebates. It is expected to open early in 2027; sign up on the Government of Canada page for the launch.

  3. Newfoundland and Labrador

Newfoundland and Labrador: new TakeCharge Greener Homes program

A new income-eligible TakeCharge Greener Homes program covers projects completed after October 5, 2026. The Oil to Electric program is still open: up to $9,000 toward a central heat pump ($22,000 income-qualified) and up to $6,500 for a multi-split ($18,000 income-qualified).

  4. Quebec

Quebec: Rénoclimat's new rules took effect October 1, 2026

The pre-work EnerGuide evaluation is now optional, with up to $500 toward it. Work must be done by a licensed contractor, and claims go through an online portal within 12 months of each upgrade. Insulation and ENERGY STAR Most Efficient windows are covered, up to $21,500 per house; air sealing, doors and HRVs no longer are. The old rules apply only to pre-work evaluations requested by October 12, 2026, with the post-work evaluation due by March 31, 2027.

  5. Ontario

Ontario: Home Renovation Savings assessment path deadlines

If you're using the assessment path, the follow-up assessment must be booked by November 30, 2026 and completed by December 31, 2026. Assessments must go through one of the seven approved service organizations.

  9. Nova Scotia

Nova Scotia: oil-to-heat-pump intake closed July 2, 2026

The federal Oil to Heat Pump Affordability program closed to new applications on July 2, 2026. Efficiency Nova Scotia's Moderate Income Rebate top-up was cut from up to $10,000 to up to $5,000; the combined maximum is still $10,000.
