Who qualifies
Homeowners installing an eligible electric cold-climate air-source heat pump from the federal Eligible Products List. It is aimed at households replacing a heating system that has broken down or is near the end of its life. One rebate per person. The median-income test, the full rules and the opening date had not been published as of October 12, 2026.
How it will work
It isn't open yet. Sign up on the Government of Canada's page to hear about the launch date, eligibility, amounts and how to apply.
When it opens, fill in a short online form with basic personal information and the heat pump you have chosen. The government says approval is confirmed within 24 hours.
Buy and install an eligible cold-climate air-source heat pump from the federal Eligible Products List.
Upload your receipts through the portal. The government says payment is approved within five days and paid by direct deposit.
Add your provincial rebate: the federal announcement says the two can be combined. Follow your province's own rules, such as pre-approval before you buy.
The gotchas
- It isn't open, and the rules aren't final. The government hasn't said whether a heat pump installed before the portal opens will qualify.
- The up-to-$10,000 rebate is for households below the median income, and the income test hasn't been published. Other eligible homeowners get $2,000.
- The backgrounder covers electric cold-climate air-source heat pumps; it does not mention ground-source systems.
- One rebate per person.
- Expect scams: apply only through the Government of Canada's own portal once it opens, and never pay anyone to reserve a rebate.
Worth knowing
Part of a $2 billion, eight-year federal plan announced October 8, 2026 to support one million home retrofits, including up to 820,000 households switching to heat pumps. The Canadian Press reported that the program will launch early next year and that its details hadn't been finalized. The federal government says both rebate levels can be combined with provincial programs. Ottawa is winding down the Oil to Heat Pump Affordability Program, which stopped taking applications on July 31, 2026.
Common questions
When does the National Heat Pump Rebate open?
Early 2027, according to the Canadian Press. The government's page says launch dates, eligibility, amounts and how to apply are still to come, and lets you sign up for updates. It wasn't open as of October 12, 2026.
How much is the federal heat pump rebate?
Up to $10,000 for eligible households below the median income, and $2,000 for other eligible homeowners, according to the October 8, 2026 announcement.
Do I need an energy audit for the National Heat Pump Rebate?
No. The federal backgrounder says no energy audits are required before or after installation. A heat-loss calculation is still the best way to size the heat pump.
Can I combine it with provincial heat pump rebates?
Yes, according to the federal announcement: both rebate levels can be combined with existing provincial programs. Each provincial program has its own rules, so check them before you buy.
Which heat pumps qualify?
Electric cold-climate air-source heat pumps on the federal Eligible Products List, which the government says has more than 100,000 options.
My furnace just died. Should I wait for the federal rebate?
The government hasn't said whether installs before the launch will count. If you can't wait, check what your province pays now. If you can, sign up for federal updates and get a heat-loss calculation and quotes ready.
Is this the Greener Homes Grant coming back?
No. The Greener Homes Grant closed to new applicants in 2024 and paid for many kinds of upgrades, with EnerGuide evaluations before and after. The new rebate is for heat pumps only and needs no evaluation.
