Utility rebate

Also called: utility rebates · utility incentive · utility incentives

Money back from your electric or gas utility for buying efficient equipment or making upgrades, often stackable with government programs.

What it means

Utilities fund rebates through their efficiency programs, and amounts, qualifying equipment and paperwork vary widely. Many require pre-approval, a participating contractor, proof of purchase and sometimes the equipment's AHRI certificate or an energy assessment; some are instant discounts through the store or contractor.

Why it matters in an audit

Rebates change the payback of upgrades, so check them before signing; some must be applied for before work starts.

In the United States

US utility programs vary by state and utility; DOE encourages states to combine HEEHR funds with other programs where they're open.
