On-bill financing

Also called: on-bill repayment · tariffed on-bill · tariffed on-bill financing · pay as you save

A way to pay for upgrades through a monthly charge on your utility bill, ideally offset by the energy savings.

What it means

With on-bill financing, the utility or a program lends the money, often at low interest, and collects payments on your bill, typically over 2 to 15 years; on-bill repayment uses private lenders' money instead. Tariffed versions attach the charge to the meter, so it can pass to the next owner or tenant, while loans usually stay with the borrower.

Why it matters in an audit

It can make upgrades possible without upfront cash, but missed payments can lead to utility disconnection, so read the terms.
