Canada Greener Homes Grant
ClosedClosed — new applications ended in February 2024 and the last payment requests were due December 31, 2025
What it offered
- up to $5,000Retrofit grants (while open)
- up to $600EnerGuide evaluations (while open)
The audit question
Audit required
Required pre- and post-retrofit EnerGuide evaluations while it ran.
Who qualifies
Closed to everyone. More than 409,000 households received grants — an average of about $4,430 each — and a June 2026 federal release puts the total at 414,000 homes.
What to do instead
In Ontario, use Home Renovation Savings: the assessment path pays up to $600 toward your EnerGuide assessments plus insulation, window and air-sealing rebates, if you can finish by December 31, 2026.
Elsewhere, check your province's current programs — several now subsidize the EnerGuide evaluation or the upgrades directly.
Lower or median household income? Check the Canada Greener Homes Affordability Program through your provincial partner (BC, Manitoba, Nova Scotia, PEI and Quebec).
Bought with a CMHC-insured mortgage in the last two years? CMHC Eco Improvement refunds 25% of your premium after $20,000 of energy work.
Still waiting on a grant payment requested before the deadline? Email enviroinfo@ec.gc.ca, and keep your documents until March 31, 2028.
The gotchas
- Websites, installers' blogs and ads dated 2026 still headline the grant. No relaunch has been announced.
- NRCan never approved any third party to phone or visit homeowners about the grant.
- The income-tested Affordability Program is a different program, not the grant reopened.
- The final deadline for payment requests was December 31, 2025 (earlier in Quebec, Ontario and Nova Scotia). Late requests aren't processed.
Worth knowing
Many websites still advertise this grant. It's closed — don't let anyone sell you an audit or a retrofit on the promise of it.
Common questions
Is the Canada Greener Homes Grant still available in 2026?
No. It stopped taking new applications in February 2024, and the last day for existing participants to request payment was December 31, 2025.
Will the Greener Homes Grant come back?
No relaunch has been announced. Federal support now goes to low-to-median-income households through the Affordability Program, alongside provincial programs.
I finished my retrofit but never got paid. What can I do?
Email enviroinfo@ec.gc.ca — the program is moving to Environment and Climate Change Canada. Payment requests submitted after December 31, 2025 aren't processed.
What replaced the grant in Ontario?
Home Renovation Savings, run by Enbridge Gas and Save on Energy since January 2025.
