Home energy audits in New Brunswick

New Brunswick's Total Home Energy Savings Program is the classic audit-first design: a home energy evaluation opens the door, and incentives follow the upgrades it recommends — doors, insulation, heating, windows. In a province with real winters and a lot of older wood-frame stock, the sequence works.

The housing stock, read like an auditor

Wood-frame farmhouses and village homes, many predating insulation standards entirely, alongside post-war stock in Moncton, Saint John, and Fredericton. Oil heat's long tail is still being converted out — heat pump adoption here has been among Canada's fastest.

The federal picture, honestly

closed Canada Greener Homes Grant & Loan: The grant closed to new applicants in February 2024; the interest-free loan (up to $40,000) stopped taking applications October 1, 2025 and its funding is fully committed. Approved applicants keep their funding — new ones can't join. ↗

live Greener Homes Affordability Program: Free direct-install retrofits (insulation, heat pumps) for low-to-median-income owners and tenants — currently delivered in BC, Manitoba, Nova Scotia, PEI, and Quebec through provincial partners, with more to be listed. You apply through your province's program, never through cold-callers. ↗

closed Oil to Heat Pump Affordability (OHPA): Closed to new applications July 31, 2026 (approved participants have until January 31, 2027 to submit receipts). It paid up to $15,000 (plus a one-time $250 payment) toward oil-to-heat-pump conversions for income-qualified households. ↗

Local geology, water sources, and climate set the home-health checklist. Each item links to its full guide; the 30-second screener personalizes it to your exact house.

Radon — Atlantic hotspot

New Brunswick posts some of Atlantic Canada's highest radon numbers in national surveying. The winter kit belongs on every homeowner's list here.

Wells everywhere

A huge share of NB homes run on private wells — test bacteria seasonally and chemistry (including arsenic and uranium, real concerns in NB geology) every few years through the provincial route.

Oil-heat CO and tanks

Remaining oil systems need annual servicing, in-date CO alarms, and honest tank inspections — insurers increasingly force the issue.

Wind-driven rain

Coastal storms push water into walls that prairie homes never see — moisture diagnosis before insulation is the rule for older envelopes.
