Home energy audits in Alberta

Alberta has no provincial audit-linked rebate right now — which makes the audit's other jobs the story here: lower bills in a cold climate with cheap gas, right-sized equipment, and pre-purchase clarity. Financing exists where your municipality runs a Clean Energy Improvement Program.

The housing stock, read like an auditor

Calgary and Edmonton's stock skews newer than central Canada's, but the climate is unforgiving: design temperatures far below the national average make envelope quality the whole game. Older bungalow belts drill-and-fill beautifully; newer tight homes need ventilation verified. Chinook cycling in the south works building envelopes hard.

Property-tax financing, select municipalities

Clean Energy Improvement Program (CEIP)

PACE-style financing repaid via property taxes, running in participating municipalities — check your municipality's current intake. Calgary's residential intake is closed until winter 2026/27. Edmonton's separate HERA rebate is fully subscribed.

Provincial audit-linked rebates

No province-wide retrofit rebate is live right now, and the federal loan and OHPA are both closed. An audit here pays through bill savings, correct equipment sizing, and negotiating power — not rebate paperwork.

The federal picture, honestly

closed Canada Greener Homes Grant & Loan: The grant closed to new applicants in February 2024; the interest-free loan (up to $40,000) stopped taking applications October 1, 2025 and its funding is fully committed. Approved applicants keep their funding — new ones can't join. ↗

live Greener Homes Affordability Program: Free direct-install retrofits (insulation, heat pumps) for low-to-median-income owners and tenants — currently delivered in BC, Manitoba, Nova Scotia, PEI, and Quebec through provincial partners, with more to be listed. You apply through your province's program, never through cold-callers. ↗

closed Oil to Heat Pump Affordability (OHPA): Closed to new applications July 31, 2026 (approved participants have until January 31, 2027 to submit receipts). Where NRCan delivered it directly (Alberta, Manitoba, the Northwest Territories, Quebec and Saskatchewan), it paid up to $10,000 toward oil-to-heat-pump conversions for income-qualified households. ↗

Monitor & test in Alberta

Local geology, water sources, and climate set the home-health checklist. Each item links to its full guide; the 30-second screener personalizes it to your exact house.

Radon — take it seriously here

Prairie geology shows up in cross-Canada radon surveys with above-average shares of homes over the guideline. A $30–$60 long-term winter kit is the answer, new builds included.

Deep-cold CO discipline

Long furnace seasons and attached garages: alarms adjacent to sleeping areas, checked for expiry, plus annual servicing — and the spillage check before any air-sealing.

Smoke-season air

Fire smoke reaches Alberta summers most years now. Monitor PM2.5 indoors and size HEPA units to bedrooms.

Rural wells

Alberta well owners can access provincial lab bacteriological testing through health services — ask your local public health office for the current route, and add periodic chemistry panels.
