The audit question

Audit required

For the flagship rebate, yes: the $400 is for a pre-retrofit EnerGuide evaluation through an approved service organization, with at least one upgrade planned within 12 months, and the air sealing bonus on an insulation project needs pre- and post-retrofit evaluations. The window, heat pump, insulation and thermostat rebates don't require an evaluation.

Who qualifies

Manitoba homeowners, including owners of rentals and cottages for the evaluation rebate, with active Manitoba Hydro residential service in a home at least two years old and heated from September to May. Window and heat pump rebates are for primary residences (yours or your tenant's); heat pumps must be installed by a contractor registered with Efficiency Manitoba. Most rebates must be claimed within 90 days of the evaluation, installation or purchase. Income-qualifying households can get a free heat pump upgrade.

How to apply, step by step

  1. Book a pre-retrofit EnerGuide evaluation through one of Efficiency Manitoba's approved service organizations, and apply for the $400 rebate within 90 days of the evaluation.

  2. Windows and doors: buy ENERGY STAR models with at least triple-pane glass, get the NRCan reference number on the invoice, and apply within 90 days of installation and payment.

  3. Heat pumps: hire a contractor registered with Efficiency Manitoba; the application goes in within 90 days of installation. Ground-source projects need approval before work starts.

  4. Insulation: check the original and final R-value requirements before you buy; for the air sealing bonus, book the pre-retrofit evaluation first.

  5. Income-qualified? Check the Energy Efficiency Assistance Program first; it can include a free evaluation and free upgrades.

The gotchas

  • The 90-day windows run from the evaluation, installation or purchase date, not from when paperwork arrives.
  • The evaluation rebate expects at least one upgrade within 12 months, and post-retrofit evaluations don't qualify for it.
  • Windows need at least triple-pane glass and an NRCan reference number; glass inserts and new openings don't count.
  • Replacing an existing air-source heat pump doesn't qualify, and new homes aren't eligible for the air-source rebate.
  • Indigenous households: the First Nation and Métis offers pay more (for example, $300 per window), so check them first.

Worth knowing

Manitoba is one of the few provinces paying toward the audit itself, and the rest of its program set now has published amounts: windows and doors $100 each, cold-climate heat pumps $1,500–$2,000 (supplementing electric or gas heat; propane and oil conversions also qualify), and insulation at $0.03 × R-value added × sq ft for attics and roofs, $0.06 for wall cavities and foundations, and $0.15 for exterior walls when re-siding. Ground-source systems can be installed with no upfront cost (projects over $38,000, or replacements over $18,500, need a contribution), and the remaining balance is due if you sell. Manitoba Hydro also lends for upgrades at 6.2% (on approved credit) for the first five years, with approval needed before work starts.

Common questions

Is the Efficiency Manitoba $400 evaluation rebate still available?

Yes, verified against the official page on October 8, 2026. Complete a pre-retrofit EnerGuide evaluation through an approved service organization, plan at least one upgrade within 12 months, and apply within 90 days of the evaluation.

How much is the Efficiency Manitoba window rebate?

$100 for each ENERGY STAR certified window, door or sliding glass door with at least triple-pane glass (entry doors without glass need only ENERGY STAR certification), or $300 each through the income-qualified, First Nation and Métis offers. Apply within 90 days of installation and payment, with the NRCan reference number for each unit on your invoice.

What heat pump rebates does Efficiency Manitoba offer?

$2,000 for a centrally ducted cold-climate air-source heat pump and $1,500 for a ductless one, supplementing electric or natural gas heat (propane and oil conversions also qualify), installed by a registered contractor in your primary residence. Ground-source systems come with no upfront cost and an interest-free $75 monthly payment for 15 years on your Manitoba Hydro bill. Income-qualifying households can get a heat pump upgrade free.

What does an EnerGuide evaluation cost in Manitoba after the rebate?

NRCan puts the pre- and post-retrofit evaluations together at $600–$1,000 on average across Canada. Efficiency Manitoba's $400 covers part of the first visit; the post-retrofit evaluation isn't covered by that rebate.

Do insulation rebates require the evaluation?

Not the basic insulation rebate, though your home may be inspected before approval. The air sealing bonus of up to $1,000 does: it's based on the drop in air leakage measured by pre- and post-retrofit EnerGuide evaluations.
