Hygrometer
Also called: humidity meter · humidity gauge
An inexpensive gauge, often combined with a thermometer, that shows a room's relative humidity so you can keep it in a healthy range.
What it means
Mechanical and electronic models are sold wherever room thermometers are, and one per house is usually enough, kept away from heat sources and chimneys. CMHC explains how to check one's accuracy with salty water in a sealed bag: after 8 to 12 hours it should read about 75%.
Why it matters in an audit
Humidity readings tell you whether condensation, mould or dry air problems need ventilation, a dehumidifier or air sealing.
Typical numbers
Reference values with their sources. Your energy advisor’s report gives the figure for your own house.
