EIA (US Energy Information Administration)
Also called: Energy Information Administration
The US government's energy statistics agency, the usual source for state electricity, natural gas, heating oil and propane prices.
What it means
EIA collects and publishes data on energy prices, production and use, including average residential prices by state. It also publishes standard conversion factors, such as 3,412 BTU per kilowatt-hour and 100,000 BTU per therm, used to compare fuels.
Why it matters in an audit
When a page estimates energy costs from EIA prices, it's using statewide averages, so your own utility rate may differ.
