Home energy assessments in Winnipeg

Winnipeg is one of the few places in Canada where the province pays you back for the audit itself: Efficiency Manitoba rebates $400 on a pre-retrofit EnerGuide evaluation — enough to cover most or all of a typical visit.

The $400 rebate, exactly

Efficiency Manitoba pays $400 after a pre-retrofit EnerGuide evaluation, as long as (Efficiency Manitoba ↗):

  • you own the home — it can be your house, a rental property or a cottage;
  • it has active Manitoba Hydro residential service and is heated from September through May;
  • it's at least two years old;
  • you plan at least one energy-efficiency upgrade within 12 months;
  • nobody has claimed this rebate for the same service at the address before; and
  • you apply within 90 days of your evaluation.

Seasonal homes, vacation rentals, unoccupied properties, new homes and post-retrofit evaluations don't qualify.

What the evaluation covers

An NRCan-registered energy advisor measures air tightness with a blower door test, and checks insulation, windows, exterior doors and the heating and cooling systems, comparing your home with new-construction standards. You get an EnerGuide rating and personalized upgrade recommendations with estimated savings.

After the evaluation

The evaluation report is your route into Efficiency Manitoba's insulation rebates and heat pump offers, with current amounts on its site. Income-qualified households have a separate door: the Energy Efficiency Assistance Program installs upgrades free, with income limits from $46,264 for one person to $122,432 for seven or more (Efficiency Manitoba ↗). Manitoba also delivers the federal Greener Homes Affordability Program.

Why Winnipeg homes gain so much

Long, deep-cold winters mean every leak costs more here than in most Canadian cities, and a blower door test finds leaks you can't see. Manitoba Hydro's low-cost, clean electricity also makes the heat pump math friendlier than in most provinces — which is why sizing matters: ask for a heat-loss calculation before you replace the furnace.
