The audit question

No audit required

Requirements vary by territory and stream — the delivery organizations advise per project, and EnerGuide evaluations are available through northern service organizations.

Who qualifies

Territorial residents, per each organization's current streams. Fuel costs several times southern prices mean every measured improvement counts double here.

How to apply, step by step

  1. Yukon: start at Good Energy rebates (Energy Branch, 1-800-661-0408) for current residential streams.

  2. NWT: contact the Arctic Energy Alliance — rebates plus genuinely free energy advice for your community's context.

  3. Nunavut: the Nunavut Housing Corporation runs homeowner repair and efficiency support; start with their current program list.

  4. Everywhere: get the evaluation or assessment the organization recommends — northern fuel prices make the measured baseline worth more, not less.

The gotchas

  • Program streams in the territories are small and change with funding years — the current list at each organization is the only reliable list.
  • Southern contractor assumptions (and southern heat pump specs) don't transfer at −40 design temperatures — use the delivery organizations' advice on equipment.
  • OHPA never applied in Nunavut and is now closed everywhere — ignore any pitch built on it.

Worth knowing

The territories run delivery organizations rather than big rebate portals — a person who knows northern construction advises your project. Note the federal OHPA excluded Nunavut's grid context entirely, and the national loan is closed; the territorial doors are the doors.

Common questions

What energy programs exist in Canada's territories?

Yukon's Good Energy rebates (retrofits, renewables, transport), the NWT's Arctic Energy Alliance (rebates and free advice), and Nunavut Housing Corporation homeowner support — each verified active September 21, 2026. Streams change with funding years, so the organizations' current lists govern.

Do heat pumps work in the territories?

Cold-climate models keep improving, but at −40 design temperatures equipment choice is genuinely specialized — this is exactly what the Arctic Energy Alliance and Yukon's Energy Branch advise on. Get northern-specific advice before any quote, and treat southern marketing claims with suspicion.

Why do audits matter more in the North?

Because fuel can cost several times southern prices, every air leak and thin assembly the audit finds is worth multiples of its southern value — and because envelope failures at northern temperatures are safety issues, not comfort issues.
